Vue du Port

19th-century French School oil on wood Panel, signed Fernand Joseph Jules Stiévenart (1862-1922) in the lower right corner. The artwork has a textured surface when touched.

This port view painting exhibits a strong Impressionist identity conveyed through varied brushstrokes. The technique beautifully captures volumes and a sense of vibrancy, reflecting the bustling atmosphere of the port. The dynamic composition is complemented by a balanced palette and subtle use of light. The small aged wood and stucco frame create an intriguing contrast with its wave-like sculpted curves.

About the artist:

Fernand Joseph Jules Stiévenart was a French painter born on May 21, 1862, in Douai. He played a significant role as one of the prominent members of the School of Wissant, an artistic hub for painters and sculptors located in the village of Wissant, north of the Opal Coast.

Stiévenart received his artistic education at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1888 to 1908, where he received the Bronze Medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. In 1902, he was awarded the 3rd class medal at the Salon of French Artists for his "Boulonnais landscape."

Together with his painter wife Juliette Reul, Stiévenart actively contributed to the flourishing of the School of Wissant. They established their studio in the village of Wissant, focusing on capturing the effects of light and the strength of marine elements in their artworks.

In the later years of his life, the couple relocated to Uccle, Belgium, where Stiévenart built a magnificent mansion. He passed away on January 22, 1922, three years before his wife. Several recent retrospectives have celebrated the artistry of Fernand Joseph Jules Stiévenart and the School of Wissant.
