20th-century French School oil on canvas signed in the lower right by Lucien Adrion (1889-1953). The canvas is smooth to the touch.

A landscape balanced by its clearly delineated lights and darks with areas of light that pierce the dark, such as at the river pooled the left of the bridge. The scene depicts lot of movement despite its few protagonists — movement that is felt by its stretched and fine brushstrokes.

About the artist: Lucien Adrion was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman and engraver born on May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg. After working in fashion in Paris, he moved to Berlin before World War I and became a pupil of Hermann Struck, one of the major artist-engravers of the first half of the 20th century who painted portraits of Oscar Wilde, Nietzsche, Freud, Einstein. Struck trained Adrion in the art of engraving, just as he had with Marc Chagall during his years in Berlin.

At the end of the war, Adrion returned to Paris and his work appeared widely in Salons throughout the city. In the years that followed he would spend more time in Normandy capturing adding beach scenes and landscape to his portfolio. He was recognized for his gift of expressing movement while emphasizing the picturesque side of city and country landscape. His works are included in major museum collections.
