20th-century Belgian School oil on wood panel signed Luc Peter Crombé (1920-2005) in the lower left. The work has a little texture to the touch.

This antique painting showcases a still life composition characterized by stretched, finely textured brushstrokes. Crombé, inspired by the Impressionists, skillfully manipulated the material in an organic manner. About the artist:

Luc Peter Crombé, a Belgian artist born in 1920 in Opwijk near Brussels, possessed a diverse artistic repertoire. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, the Saint-Luc Higher Institute in Ghent, and the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Crombé excelled in various artistic disciplines including painting, drawing, glasswork, ceramics, jewelry design, tapestries, and restoration.

His artistic journey took him to Venice, Rome, Paris, and Frankfurt, where he restored and painted frescoes. Drawing inspiration from his extensive travels and studies in art history at the École du Louvre in Paris and Italy, as well as his time as a student at the Frankfurt School of Graphic Arts, Crombé explored diverse subjects such as religion, genre scenes, nudes, landscapes, and still lifes. His visits to Spain and Morocco further refined his mastery of color.

Influenced by Italian Renaissance art, Crombé developed a keen sensitivity to lines and reduced curves to their essential forms, much like his carefully chosen palette. His unique working method, layering thin transparent layers of paint, resulted in intensified colors and a captivating liveliness.

After years of undertaking international projects, Crombé returned to Belgium, settling in Saint-Martens-Latem and later Deurle. He taught at the Berchmans Institute in Ghent and collaborated with museums in the Belgian capital. Luc Peter Crombé passed away in 2005, leaving behind a rare and diverse artistic legacy.
