19th-century French School oil on canvas signed H. Py (19th century). An old label on the back locates the view in Port-Lesney (Burgundy) and the date as 1888. The work is smooth to the touch.

A view of the old village bridge with a figure and his herd. The brushstrokes are gentle and airy. The light holds a central place in this work. It is diffused with striking realism and finds its way into every part of the landscape. Look closely and you will see the diffused light under arches, and across the foliage, river, and even as shimmering reflections on animals. This shimmer marks a fleeting time of day, and a freshness that emanates from this moment in the Burgundy countryside in 1888.

About Port-Lesney bridge: The ancient crossing with large pillars and low arches was built before the 15th century was a vital throughway to connect the city of Besançon. Floods were frequent and the thick structure was reinforced over the years until the construction of a more modern bridge in 1938. An arch of the old bridge, visible in this painting, is still preserved today in Port-Lesney.
