Dark Lake
Antique oil painting from Belgium, from artist Carl Friedrich Werlemann. Werlemann was part of a Flemish painters' collective, called the Cercle d'Art Labeur, co-founded In May 1898, by Jules Sébastien Camille Marie Merckaert, a Belgian figurative painter (1872-1924). This Brussels artist collective was an eclectic circle featuring painters, sculptors and musicians.
This painting is typical of the French School of the XIXth century, emitting a strong melancholy with the abundance of dark deep colors, even in the reflection upon the water. The blackness of the painting is brilliantly nuanced by the light surrounding the scene.
