Pot de Fleur

20th century Flemish school oil on carton signed Dirk (Dick) Pieter Braam (1908-1986) and dated 1942 in the lower right. The work is slightly textured to the touch.

A modern still life with fine brushstrokes throughout, with increasing compactness in the leaves of the potted plant, accentuating the darks and highlighting the rare notes of bright colors in the petals. The light is soft and realistically transcribes shadows and reflections. The uniform colored background translates a desire for total minimalism, complete with this stucco taupe frame resulting in a matte and beautifully sober subject.

About the artist:

Dirk Pieter Braam, known as Dick Braam, was a Dutch post-impressionist painter born in The Hague on September 9, 1908. He received his artistic training at The Hague Academy of Fine Arts, The Royal National Higher Institute of Fine Arts, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Braam's primary subjects of focus were still lifes, nudes, studio interiors, and landscapes, often characterized by a luminous color palette.

In 1925, he established his studio in The Hague, where he remained until his passing January 14, 1986. During his career, Braam was affiliated with the artistic institution Pulchri Studio, and he maintained a collaboration with them for over two decades. The studio was known for its engagement with various Flemish and international artists, including Anton Mauve (1838-1888), Paul Citroen (1896-1983), and Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991).

Some of Dirk Pieter Braam's artworks are held in the modern art department of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag (Art Museum in The Hague).
