Artist Portrait
£603.00
20th-century portrait, which is signed A. Berthault, 1928, in the upper left-hand corner. This portrait is believed to be a self portrait of the painter himself, and matches his age.
Auguste Berthault (1862-1942), was a French painter from Nievre, the department located in central-east France. He was mainly a watercolor painter, who ventured into oils later in his life and career.
This self portrait demonstrates a talent for light, and softness. The hair and skin are delicately rendered, and the dark background shows depth and has a halo effect upon closer inspection. Of note on the condition, there is one small hole to the left of the painter's face, and some flecks missing in other parts of the canvas.
