Le Sentier
A late 19th-century landscape on a wooden panel, signed Theodore David (1848-1915) in the bottom left. A French painter born in Le Mans (Sarthe) in 1848 and who passed away in the same city in 1915. The artist was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and ran a studio in the city of Le Mans (Pays de la Loire). He exhibited twelve times at the Paris Salon between 1880 and 1914.
He was known for painting urban scenes, which brought him regional fame in his time. For this landscape, Theodore David draws inspiration from the Barbizon School, with dense, dark vegetation and a very restrained use of light.
A rare collector's piece, enhanced by its imposing antique Beaux-arts carved wooden frame from the late 19th century.
