La Vallée

This 19th-century French School oil painting on carton board is attributed to Charles Berges (1851-1941). It is not part of the Tremblay workshop collection.

This piece exemplifies the "en plein air" or open-air tradition of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The painter worked outdoors to capture the movement, color, and atmosphere of the environment. The painting showcases dynamic brushstrokes and a varied use of heavy and light paints. The small houses are particularly defined with generous paint application, contrasting with the more subdued rolling hills. The fields and clouds demonstrate the extensive layering used to create the subtle effects of this landscape.
