Voiliers au Loin
19th-century small scale ocean painting, where the water and sky are deep muted grey, and a couple tiny sailboats appear on the horizon. Signed J. Benoit-Levy, for Jules Benoit-Lévy (1866-1952).
Benoit-Lévy (1866–1952) was a French painter and printmaker known for his history and sea paintings, genre scenes, and depictions of everyday life. Trained at the Paris School of Decorative Arts and the School of Fine Arts, he studied under notable artists like Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre.
Benoit-Lévy gained recognition for his detailed and atmospheric works, including a series of 50 paintings inspired by the Dutch island of Marken. He exhibited extensively at the Salon des Artistes Français, earning multiple medals, and participated in international exhibitions in Monte-Carlo and Paris. Honored with the Golden Ordre des Palmes Académiques, he passed away in Nogent-sur-Marne in 1952.
This painting is one of the most special sea paintings we have sourced, for its monochromatic peacefulness, that belies the complexity and great skill. We paired it with an original frame in gold leaf from the 1800's to celebrate the beauty of the work.
