19th-century French oil painting on canvas, signed F. Barillet, 1897, for François Barillet (1849-1911).
This muted farm scene shows a unique angle from behind the house, with the signs of a working farm clearly visible. Fencing is stacked along the back of the stone house, and we see the beginnings of a rock wall to the left of the road. In the distance, barely visible, is a woman walking or working in the fields.
The painting is reminiscent of later Barbizon works, as it seeks to show everyday life as it really was. The work is in excellent condition for its age, complete with a resplendent original frame, repainted in recent years, but possessing original acanthus leaf moldings.
