Chez Cécile

£1,253.00

A captivating interior painting on canvas from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The work is signed, "C. Hertz," in the lower right hand corner.

This interior oil painting captures the French Art Nouveau home where Cécile lived with her husband and family. In her biography and paintings, this house was a central figure, and clearly a sanctuary for her. The scene features a table draped with a white tablecloth, illuminated by diffused light streaming through the windows. The painting is rich with details from her life—art on the walls, a bowl of fruit, tapestry-covered chairs, and the enormous Art Nouveau chandelier. While the interior is mostly in shadow, and resonates with warm brown tones, the light and objects reveal their beauty upon closer inspection, creating a scene that is both intimate and alive.

Condition to note: The painting is in excellent condition for its age. There is a small fleck of paint missing from the canvas on the lower right corner above the artist's signature.
