Le Clocher
A quintessential village painting on canvas mounted on hard carton from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The work has the atelier stamp on the back of the painting.
This village oil painting scene features a church steeple, surrounded by a village. It appears that the scene was painted from up high, such as on a bridge or the wall of a fortress. The painting is made of blocks of color, with strong vertical and horizontal brush strokes, creating an interesting mix of impressionism and a more modern style.
Condition to note: There are a few marks on the surface of the painting, and in the bottom right hand corner there is bit of bubbling, a few inches long, where the canvas has bubbled up off of the carton.
