Le Morvan
20th-century French school large-scale oil on carton by Raymond Rochette (1906-1993), signed in the lower left corner. The work has minimal texture to the touch.
This harvest landscape features a multitude of energetic and juxtaposed brushstrokes, with the diversity of volumes providing significant relief and a sculptural rendering of the elements. The tactile dimension is based on a realistic portrayal of light and colors, as demonstrated by the central millstone. The vastness of the valley is suggested by the subtle blurring of geometry towards the horizon, with the depth accentuated by the expansive Montparnasse frame that stretches its angles skyward.
About the artist: Raymond Rochette was a French painter born on May 25, 1906, in Creusot (Burgundy). He began drawing charcoal early on but never attended any academic art school. His lack of classical training made him a unique artist, unrestricted by conventions and passionate about various subjects.
Rochette painted landscapes of the Morvan region, rural life scenes, factories, and portraits. He traveled extensively in Morocco and Italy, seeking new sources of inspiration. His landscapes are consistently luminous, featuring a vibrant color palette.
Raymond Rochette passed away in 1993 in his childhood village. Many of his works can be found in French Fine Arts museums. In 2006, several retrospectives and exhibitions of his works took place in Burgundy and throughout France.
