Rue Wallonne
A 20th-century Belgian school oil painting on canvas, signed by Piet Lippens, also known as Petrus René Lippens (1890-1981). The work has texture to the touch.
The painting is composed of thick, wavy brushstrokes, reminiscent of the surface of water, particularly evident in the sky. Brown houses with green shutters line a road or path. The thick canvas provides the perfect foundation for this heavily textured and expressive piece.
About the artist:
Petrus René Lippens was a Belgian Impressionist painter, born in Gentbrugge in 1890. He passed away in Ghent in 1981. His artistic journey commenced at 17 when he traveled to New York, immersing himself in the American landscape and working various jobs while nurturing a deep passion for art. This early exposure led him back to Belgium for formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai, followed by another significant trip to Chicago.
Lippens' experiences in the United States profoundly shaped his artistic vision, particularly the rapid changes in 1920s America, which influenced the most dynamic and challenging phase of his career. Known for his realistic-impressionist style, Lippens' later works displayed a shift towards brighter colors and a departure from melancholy themes.
The press described him as having a pessimistic worldview, yet his work often contained lyrical nuances. Lippens had a fondness for depicting the enduring spirit of weather-beaten landscapes, empty spaces, and industrial outskirts. His contributions were significant, with his legacy preserved in the Ghent Museum and his art prominently featured in various publications. In America, he adopted the pseudonym "Mac Kelly," further diversifying his artistic identity. His works continue to be celebrated, particularly at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium.
