20th-century oil painting on wooden panel signed Louis Clesse (1889-1961) in the lower left and dated '34. The work has texture to the touch.

A still life featuring pastries, coffee service and a breakfast spread on a white tablecloth depicted with textured and dynamic brushstrokes. Louis Clesse's Impressionist technique imparts a soft and velvety quality to the pastries, whose imperfect geometry stands in contrast to the surrounding elements. About the artist: 

Louis Liévin Théophile Clesse was a Belgian painter born in Ixelles (south-east of Brussels) in 1889.

Clesse trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ixelles and then worked in the decoration workshop of marine painter Paul Hermanus (1859-1911). He was a member of the Brussels Artistic Circle and exhibited in various European fairs such as Barcelona, ​​Liège, Brussels, Antwerp, and Nice.

His oeuvre encompassed landscapes of both northern Belgium and France, characterized by vibrant lighting. Additionally, he painted still lifes and seascapes. Many of his notable pieces can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
