Lac Nuageux
This 19th-century oil painting on hard carton board is from the atelier of Normandy painter Emile Tremblay (1855-1935). The back of the painting attributes it to Louis Alexandre Joannis, born in 1783.
This is a gorgeous small-scale work, created with great skill and small brushstrokes. Some textures in the painting resemble fingerprints, and there appears to be a fingerprint in the lake. Although unsigned, the painting remarkably resembles the Normandy landscape. A pencil inscription on the back reads, "Sans doute Alexandre Johannis," which translates to "Without doubt, Alexandre Johannis." Louis Alexandre Joannis was a painter born in 1783 in Paris, who successfully submitted his landscapes to the salons in the mid-1800s. How Tremblay acquired his work remains unknown.
