Les Artichauts
20th Century French School oil on canvas signed Etienne Morillon (1884-1949). The work is smooth to the touch.
Morillon demonstrates the importance of light in his work. Natural light lingers first on the overall composition and guide the gaze to reveal a multitude of details. He perfectly harmonizes the textured colors with the shadows and gradient reflections. The composition carries a realistic and captivating essence.
More about the artist: Etienne Morillon is a French painter and engraver, born on July 16, 1884 in Soucieu-en-Jarrest (Rhône). He is considered a master of Lyon paintings. Morillon trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris with one of the Fauvism founders, André Derain (1880-1954).
He then set up his atelier in Lyon and became a founding member of the Ziniars group (a group of modernist painters from Lyon). He made portraits, life scenes, landscapes, without haste to better understand the subject before painting. But his reputation is founded by his minimalist and structured still lifes with singular light work.
Morillon's work is influenced by Cézanne and his master Derain, as well as Cubism and Art Deco. Several of his work is displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon and in other various French museums.
