Rocks & Cove

20th century Italian School oil on wood with a plaque on the frame in the name of Camillo Innocenti (1871-1961). The work is smooth to the touch.

An Impressionist view of rocks and the sea with a misty rendering à la Monet and wavy brushstrokes. The shades of brown predominate the canvas to better bring out the fragile blue of the sea, just visible between the two large rocks and the reddened sky. The imposing brown frame sublimates this sunrise and supports the reputation of its author.

About the artist: Camillo Innocenti (1871-1961) was an Italian painter who graduated from the Fine Arts School in Rome and who stands out for the multitude of movements he was a part of and the subjects he painted. He painted everything from tavern scenes, inspired by the 17th century, to intimate impressionist portraits of the European bourgeoisie. He was equally at ease using thick oil paint brushes, and those made for fine watercolors.

Innocenti's first official consecration took place in Paris in 1913 with a personal exhibition of thirty oils exhibited at the Bernheim-Jeune Frères gallery, the epicenter of the European artistic avant-garde of that time, preceding personal exhibitions of renowned artists such as Monet, Modigliani, Léger, Boccioni, Renoir, Matisse, Cézanne and even Rodin.

A little of this past glory was returned to him in 1965 during a retrospective at the IX Quadrennial of Rome.

Today, several of his works are present in the biggest museums of the Italian capital such as the Accademia Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art, as well as in the cities where he painted landscapes and portraits, such as the Modern Art Gallery of Palermo.
