19th-century French School oil on carton signed Louis Cauvin and dated 1857 in the lower left. The work is smooth to the touch.

A landscape with a detailed work of light and search for authenticity. Each foliage responds to realistic light and color variations. The work of shadows on the bark and the branches of the tree reflect a deep concern for natural rendering. The simple subject is imbued with a sense of purity by Louis Cauvin.

About the artist: Louis Édouard Isidore Cauvin, known as Louis Cauvin, was a French painter born in 1816. He passed away in 1900 in Toulon (southwest). He was the cousin and pupil of the painter Vincent Courdouan (1810-1893), who was considered the leader of the Provençal School.

After his classical training, Louis Cauvin traveled and painted oils and watercolors of landscapes and seascapes in North Africa and in the French Provinces. He received The National Order of the Legion of Honor in 1975 and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1839 to 1878.

Several of his works are in French museums including the museum dedicated to the work of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Montauban (southwest). This museum is where the Mona Lisa and other works from the Louvre were hidden at the dawn of the Second World War.

• Condition: The top edges of the carton have some marks from an old frame and a comma notch at the bottom right. The new frame is in very good condition and the Marie Louise consolidates the back of the work while the light brown velvet lining reinforces the elegance of the whole.
