Campagne

An oil painting on hard carton, from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The reverse bears the artist’s atelier stamp.

This loosely rendered landscape is painted in broad, expressive strokes, using earthy greens and browns. A field stretches out in the foreground, where a few cows graze, dispersed between tall oak trees that frame either side of the composition. Under one of the trees, a few seated figures appear, though they remain soft and indistinct — more suggestion than detail. Beyond the trees, the landscape opens into sweeping fields and woodland, with a bright sky above that gives the impression of looking out over a wide, open valley.

This is a true atelier piece, with visible brushwork, areas where the carton shows through, and surface marks that speak to its age and use. The corners are softly worn, and the painting carries the quiet patina of early 20th-century life and process.

Condition to note: The painting shows signs of age, including surface marks, smudges, and rounded corners.
