Blue River

20th-century Belgium school oil painting on hardboard, signed in the lower right by Paul Hagemans (1884 -1959). The work has texture to the touch.

This neo-impressionist river landscape depicts a figure kneeling next to a stream. The brushstrokes are tumultuous and voluminous, conveying a profound sense of movement and emotion. Despite the abundance of textures and lines, the composition has a delightful coherence. The use of vibrant colors creates a strong and luminous effect.

The double frame, with its velvet green lining, matches the artwork perfectly.

About the artist:

Paul Hagemans was a Belgian painter and lithographer born on April 3, 1884, in Antwerp, Belgium. He began his artistic career in the early 1900s, studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

In 1910, Hagemans moved to Paris, where he was greatly influenced by Fauvism and Cubism. During World War I, he joined the Belgian army and was captured by German forces, spending a significant portion of the war in captivity.

After his release in 1919, he returned to Antwerp and exhibited his works, revealing his unique style which combined elements of realism and expressionism. In the subsequent years, Hagemans participated in numerous exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, solidifying his reputation as an innovative artist.

In 1935, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium. His artistic career was interrupted by World War II, but he resumed his activities in the post-war years. Paul Hagemans passed away on July 22, 1959, in his hometown of Antwerp.
