The Gentleman

Antique Oil Painting Portrait from France: French School at the end of the 19th-century oil on canvas signed Jane Bernel and dated 1892, with an inscription dedicating the painting to Mme Marie Louise Dalos.
The canvas is smooth with a uniform rendering and this portrait of a bourgeois in austere dress creates a dramatic effect against the light colorful background. The look and the expression of the sitter are marked, and the gentleman has an upright posture denoting a readiness. The shadows and reflections of the paint are worked with great mastery, as are the features of the face and the nuances of the skin, which reveal something of the intimate character of the sitter, marked with beauty and time.

  • Condition: The canvas is in excellent condition despite a small lack of less than 0.3" on the canvas to the right of the dedication. The frame is also in very good condition. It has some marks and traces of the weather. Note a minor lack of moldings on the right central outer edge, but overall an exceptional condition and quality.
