Les Maisons
20th-century Belgian school oil on canvas mounted on carton signed Jean Parmentier (1883-1973) and dated 36 for 1936. The work has little texture to the touch.
A brocante painting with great geometrical elements and strong shapes, this 1930's work on hard carton looks like it was created with a certain speed and freedom, which belies the sharp line details the artist added later to the structures to make them pop in their dimension. Cool tones evoke stone, changing lights, and the moody landscape of this farm. An inscription on the back of the painting says "Mortehan" which is a rural area in Belgium along the French border, presumably the subject of the painting.
Frayed edges in a few places add charm to the piece, and this painting would be an excellent addition to a bookshelf or framed to join an art wall.
