Pont de l'Alma
A lovely view of the Pont de l'Alma in Paris, created on hardboard and attributed to Paul Hercule Hogg (1892-1924). It is indicated on the back that the view is from the Passerelle Debilly, a pedestrian bridge also spanning the Seine. The rounded contours and vaporous brushstrokes give a real softness to the scene. The palette is bright and reflects the artist's journey, deeply connected to Mediterranean landscapes.
About the artist:
Paul Hercule Hogg (1892-1985) is a Swiss painter and draftsman, born in Herisau. After studying in Switzerland, he moved to Paris in 1910, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and became a student of Fernand Cormon, alongside artists like Chaïm Soutine.
He became a member of the Salon d'Automne in 1924 and regularly exhibited at the Salons des Tuileries and Indépendants. Hogg made numerous trips to North Africa, where he was awarded a decoration in 1937 for his work in Morocco. In 1939, on the eve of World War II, he left Paris, settling in Sanary-sur-Mer. However, he remained connected to Switzerland, exhibiting regularly in Fribourg.
