Lavandière

A whimsical scene on hard carton from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The work has the atelier stamp on the back of the painting.

This lifestyle scene features a woman in the lower right-hand corner, kneeling along the banks of a meandering river, washing laundry, hence the name, "Lavandière," which means laundress or washerwoman. The painting is made up of vivid strokes of green, and muted blues. Against the sky, the rooftops of homes and a church are visible, including the crosses. A charming painting capturing a tranquil moment in time, during a peaceful period of Cécile's life before the onset of WWII.

Condition to note: There are a few marks on the surface of the painting, and a few places where flakes of paint were scraped off, especially along the left edge. Wear is consistent with age and the painting is in good overall condition.
