La Rivière

A landscape oil painting on board, from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The reverse bears the artist’s atelier stamp.

This river scene evokes a tidal landscape, with soft dune tones, an uneven shoreline, and water sweeping diagonally across the composition before slipping out of view behind a small wooden boat, pulled up onto the grasses. In the foreground, a few sheep graze — rendered in loose, gestural brushstrokes. The painting is defined by its fluid movement and freedom of form, with the heaviest application of paint where frothy white water meets the grassy bank, suggesting the energy of an outward tide.

In the background, rooftops of country houses emerge with just a few lyrical strokes, set against a broad, open sky.

The painting is housed in its vintage gold frame with a grey velvet mat, which echoes the soft shadows in the landscape and adds a sense of quiet depth.
