Harengs

A striking still life on canvas mounted to carton, from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The reverse bears the artist’s atelier stamp.

This intimate composition features two herring laid across crinkled wax paper, resting on a folded newspaper. Hertz-Eyrolles directs the viewer’s attention to the fish in the foreground, where expressive brushwork and bold, layered color bring out fine details and texture. Along the belly of the herring, we can see the use of amber, violet, and rust tones to depict the way light reflects off scales. The remainder of the canvas — a subdued brown backdrop — recedes into softness, offering contrast to the focus and energy at the center of the scene.

The painting captures a quiet, domestic moment — perhaps just after returning from the market — rendered with the artist’s characteristic restraint and sensitivity.

Condition to note: The painting is in very good condition. The edges of the canvas are gently worn and rounded. It would pair well with a simple frame to complement its understated palette.
