Ébauche Marine
An “unfinished” or atelier oil painting on hard carton, from the home and atelier of French artist Cécile Hertz-Eyrolles (1875–1974). The reverse bears the artist’s atelier stamp.
This study shows a sailboat pulled up on the sand at low tide, with a church tower rising behind it and the faint outline of a town beginning to emerge. The painting appears incomplete, yet balanced — areas of bare carton show through, forming part of the composition. The warm brown of the support complements the light peach, lavender, and pale grey tones Hertz-Eyrolles used to bring form and atmosphere to the scene.
Though clearly in progress, the piece feels harmonious. It offers a quiet look into the artist’s process — a moment captured mid-creation, where sketch and intention blend into something quietly compelling.
