Champ en été

A 20th-century French school oil on paper, skillfully marouflaged on cardboard and signed by Pierre Chapuis (1863-1942) in the lower left corner, dated August 1916. This piece has a tactile texture.

This Impressionist landscape captures the essence of the countryside with compact, dynamic brushstrokes. The painting employs a bold perspective, featuring foreground branches that dramatically enter the scene, creating a trompe l'oeil effect that masterfully unveils depth amidst a seemingly chaotic flora. The color palette strikes a perfect balance between warmth and coolness, bathed in a precisely calibrated light that evokes a peaceful summer afternoon in the countryside.

About the artist:

Pierre Chapuis, a Parisian born in 1863, was recognized early for his drawing talent. Following his education, he apprenticed with decorators and, from 1906, exhibited at notable Parisian shows, including the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Salon d'Automne (1907), and Salon des Indépendants, continuing until his death in 1942.

Though initially famed for his theater set designs, Chapuis' legacy shines through his watercolors, particularly those depicting Normandy's Trouville and Deauville. From 1912 to 1932, he lived in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, where he fully devoted himself to painting, influenced by neo-impressionism and a deep love for nature. His works, rich in landscape and urban scenes, reflect a vibrant, impressionist palette and fluid, expressive brushstrokes. Noteworthy pieces include "Le port de Loctudy" and "Saint-Leu-la-Forêt" (1904), with significant works held in the Pissarro Museum and the Trouville-sur-Mer Museum. His contribution to art is commemorated in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, where a street is named in his honor, and his impact was celebrated in retrospectives at the Pissarro Museum in Pontoise and the Trouville museum in 1986.
