Fleurs des Champs
Original oil painting from France: A rare large-scale still life of a wildflower bouquet signed Albert Gaston Guilloux (1871-1952).
The canvas is relatively smooth with some thickness on the petals of the bouquet. The grège-brown gradient of the background creates a balanced light that brings out the sober colors of the wildflowers. Vegetable anarchy is mastered by the chiaroscuro and the vase, which was created in tones that gradually opens the bouquet towards the light. A captivating work, reinforced by its imposing and elegant carved wooden frame.
About the artist: Albert Gaston Guilloux (1871-1952) comes from an artist family from Rouen in Normandy. His father and uncle were sculptors, and his brother taught fine arts. Guilloux attended the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a remarkable student and won prizes for his accomplishments. After school, he set up his atelier in Montparnasse, like many others artist before him. He returned to Rouen unexpectedly during the general mobilization, when the First World War broke out.
After the War, continuing his passion for the arts, Guilloux headed to Italy to work on sculptures, and attended art fairs on behalf of the French government. He was widely celebrated and went on to be named Knight of the Legion of Honor. Guilloux died in 1952, in his Parisian atelier.
