Rustic Port
A 20th Century French School oil painting on carton dated 1922 in the lower right hand corner and inscribed with a location. The surface has a little texture to the touch.
This medium-sized oil painting of a port depicts colorful wooden boats moored along the beach. The bright blue water and peachy tones of the buildings reflects a south of France landscape, complete with reflections in the ocean and a peaceful sky. Thick brush strokes of paint add dynamism and movement.
The painting is quite heavy for carton, and feels almost like wood. The light wooden frame is a great addition, and has been repainted with time.
The back of the painting is inscribed, in French, "Carton prepared by Olive... perfumer at Martigues." The port city does appear to be Martigues, and "Olive" was most likely Henri Jean-François OLIVE, also known as Olive-Tamari ou Olive des Martigues (1898-1980), Côte d'Azur.
