Roussillon

Vintage French art: French School from the beginning of the 20th-century oil on carton with an inscription on the back that reads Louis Montagné (1879-1960).

The panel has great thicknesses and texture on the sunlit rocks in the foreground. This landscape of Roussillon in the south of France presents a beautiful light and a subtle mixture of ocher colors and a bright landscape of plants and foliage.

About the artist: Louis Agricol Montagné (1879-1960) was a French painter and watercolorist. He trained at the School of Fine Arts in Paris with Fernand Cormon (1845-1924) and Paul Saïn (1853-1908). Montagné collaborated with Paul Saïn on the decoration of the restaurant Le Train Bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris, when he was only 21 years old.

A couple of years later he exhibited in Paris at the Salon d'Automne in 1901. He became a member of the Group of Thirteen, an early 1900's group of regional artists. A couple of years later, he became Beaux-Arts director in Avignon. 

He founded the Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture à l'Eau, an association of French landscape painters and watercolor painters. He was very active in associations supporting artists and the arts throughout his life.
