Le Cirque
20th century Belgian school oil painting on wood signed Pol François Mathieu (1895-1979) and dated '44 lower right. The work has a little texture to the touch.
A rare Impressionist subject features a figure near a traveling circus installation with the red caravan parked under a tree in front of a blue tent with a multicolored canopy. The brushstrokes are rapid, visible, and expansive. The emotionally charged technique and robust colors combined with various geometric shapes and lines, imparts significant movement to the scene.
