Vue Fluviale
This 19th-century French School oil painting on carton board is attributed to Charles Berges (1851-1941). It is not part of the Tremblay workshop collection.
This piece exemplifies the "en plein air" or open-air tradition of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The painter worked outdoors to capture the movement, color, and atmosphere of the environment. This soft landscape reveals a skilled approach to depicting the colors and movement of the trees, the dimensional sky, and the more abstract reflections in the river below. Due to age, the heavily applied oil paint has developed craquelures, which add to the charm of the piece.
