Le Ciel
A 20th Century Belgian School oil painting on hard carton board signed by Karel van Lerberghe (1889-1953). The work has a slight texture to the touch.
This is a gorgeous and dramatic piece, with the majority of the artwork dedicated to the sky. The sky is filled with billowing clouds, leaving uncertainty as to whether it is about to split open into sunshine or close over into a storm. The rolling landscape below, dotted with fields and villages, appears small and delicate in comparison with the scale and dynamism of the sky.
The contemporary frame was carefully selected for its multitude of layers and tones that match perfectly the painting, and reveal the depth of the sky and landscape. The antique gold picks up the chrome tones in the sky, and the entire composition ends up being a stunning decor piece.
About the artist:
Karel van Lerberghe (1889-1953) was a Belgian painter whose work left a lasting mark on the 20th-century artistic landscape. Born in Ghent, Belgium, on September 15, 1889, van Lerberghe displayed an early talent for art, studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown.
His artistic style evolved within the context of Flemish Expressionism, characterized by vivid colors, angular forms, and deep emotional introspection. Inspired by Flemish landscapes, urban scenes, and portraits, van Lerberghe developed a distinctive technique that merged the precision of drawing with the spontaneity of color.
